2024 Opening Weekend: Blue Sox go to Bloomington

Updated: May 23, 2024

After narrowly missing the Earthquake that shook NYC just prior to arrival at O'Hare Airport, the Blue Sox were able to enjoy a weekend of strong performances and fantastic games against well regarded teams in our opening games of the 2024 season.

Opening Day: Chicago PD White Knights

As the lights became brighter and the temperatures colder (35 degrees by the ninth inning) in the Opening game against the CPD White Knights, the season started at the gorgeous Wintrust Field, home of the Schaumburg Boomers, in Schaumburg Illinois. Despite the early season weather, both teams seemingly started in mid-season form in a game that saw the Blue Sox holding leads of 2-0, 2-1 and 3-2 for the entire game until the ninth inning when CPD floated a one out, bottom of the ninth, bases loaded game winning single just past the Blue Sox leaping second baseman's glove for a thrilling 4-3 walk off victory.

Game 2: Cookout at the Corn Crib: St. Louis Clydesdales

In a game that saw a week of bad weather create a change of venue from the Field of Dreams to the Corn Crib, home of the Normal Cornbelters, the stadium was equally as amazing as that of Wintrust and a fantastic alternative location to an historic venue. In the absence of repeated lines from Field of Dreams taking up time in the dugout, the game started with St. Louis protecting a 3-0 lead until the 6th and 7th innings saw the Blue Sox manufacturing runs through clutch hits, sac bunts and winning it on a walk-off sac fly by the score of, you guessed it, 4-3.

Weekend Wrap-up

It was a fantastic start to the 2024 season that saw the Blue Sox square off against two very strong teams with all pitchers on all sides throwing fantastically and both games saw strong defense, diving and sliding grabs and offense that needed to not only be timely but well earned and manufactured. We couldn't ask for a better weekend of baseball to kick start the 2024 season. Thank you to our hosts, the Chicago PD, that extended us the invite and the St. Louis Clydesdales that, although we didn't get go square off at Field of Dreams, still made the trip to play at an equally as gorgeous park. We appreciate both squads for a truly memorable weekend.
